The mesothelium is a type of membrane that forms the lining to cover and protect several of the body cavities. The first layer normally surrounds the organ and the second one forms a sac around it. Think of mesothelium as manufacturer of a type of lubricating fluid that is released between the layers, allowing moving organs to move easily.

This lubricating fluid is normally non-adhesive and to protect the surface to help introcoelomic movement.
Depending on where it is located the mesothelium has different names. For example, the peritoneum is the mesothelia tissue that is found in most organs in the abdominal cavity.
